Check the dump's sanity by looking at the ASCII representation of addresses E8-EE. Use the EEPROM programmer to dump the contents of the 93C56 chip of the replacement EKM. Therefore it's highly recommended that you pick a replacement EKM with the same part number or newer. The modules are backward compatible (you can use the latest revision in a '90 850i) but they are not fully forward compatible. Over the years BMW used several revisions of the EKM module. It's also not completely without desoldering because the EKM has metal shielding of which you need to desolder and remove the lid. Luckily the EKM uses a 93C56 serial EEPROM which can be read and programmed in-circuit (without desoldering), but obviously you'll need an EEPROM programmer with in-system-programming (ISP) functionality and some basic knowledge of using these tools. You'll have to read the EKM module's EEPROM, toggle a few bytes and reprogram it. The other way around, installing a used EKM from another car, works exactly the same but sadly there is no software available at the moment that can do the trick with just a few mouse clicks. When fitted, an external EEPROM allows customisation of the device default parameters such as VID, PID, Serial Number, Manufacturer Descriptor and Product Descriptor. The BM and C devices also support 93C56 and 93C66 EEPROMs organised in 16-bit words. These devices support 93C46 EEPROMs organised in 16-bit words, except for the R series devices which have an internal EEPROM.
